We are looking forward to a successful year with lots of exciting topics and learning experiences for the children in Year 6 to enjoy, developing their skills and discovering new learning.

Things to Remember

  • Please ensure your child has the correct uniform including for P.E. If your child chooses to wear a collared shirt, they will also need to wear their tie.
  • P.E. is on a Friday each week. This is also our Sports Club day.
  • Children in Year 6 are welcome to bring a water bottle to school but please ensure it is labelled.

Kooth

Kooth.com

The children took part in a webinar all about Kooth, a free website that helps young people look after their mental health and wellbeing. Kooth is a safe and friendly place online where children can read helpful articles, share their thoughts, and get support from trained counsellors if they ever need someone to talk to.

During the webinar, we discussed the importance of friendship, being supportive, and being honest, even when it can feel difficult. The children learnt that being a good friend means listening, showing kindness, and helping others feel included and valued. They also talked about how honesty and trust help build strong, positive relationships.

This links closely to our Year 6 PSHE learning, where we have been exploring how to manage our emotions, show empathy, and make responsible choices that support healthy friendships. It also connects to our No Outsiders, which teaches us to celebrate differences, stand up for what is right, and ensure everyone feels respected and included. The webinar helped reinforce these important messages, reminding us that it’s okay to talk about our feelings and to seek help when we need it.

Please feel free to check out the website and resources available.

Year 6 Long Term Plan

Year 6 Reading Spine

White Rose

We plan for progression by following the White Rose Curriculum which prioritises every child securing a strong sense of number, reasoning and problem solving, mental fluency and the skills which will lead to mastery. This will allow our children to identify patterns and use a range of creative and flexible approaches to solve problems and calculations. Our mastery curriculum allows learners to secure a deep understanding of mathematical concepts which provide children with a solid foundation upon which further learning can be built.

In our maths lessons you will see:

• Quality first teaching

• The use of high quality questioning to develop understanding

• Addressing misconceptions to allow all learners to further understand concepts, in particular explaining errors

• A consistent style of teaching and methods tailored to the topic and the children; based on the understanding of using the concrete-pictorial-abstract representations of mathematical concepts

• Pupils being given the opportunity to develop fluency in lessons, securing knowledge and understanding, before tacking  application, reasoning and problem solving activities

• Pupils learning and discussing mathematical concepts together, thinking critically and justifying

• Opportunities to revisit and secure previous learning when teaching new concepts
