Harvest time is quickly approaching and once again at Silver Springs Academy, we are looking forward to celebrating this important time of year!
Every year, we are overwhelmed by the generous donations that we receive from our families to help others in the community and I am sure this year will be no exception.
We would like each child to bring a food donation on or before Thursday 24th October 2024. This year we are asking in particular for tinned goods (including vegetables), tinned tomatoes, tinned fruit, custard and rice pudding, tea, coffee, long life juice or squash, biscuits, pasta sauces, alongside the usual dried foods like beans, rice and pasta.
Toiletries are also very welcome, particularly shampoo and shower gel. Please don’t be tempted to send any fresh foods, fruits or vegetables, as these are not likely to last very long. Please remind children to bring any donations to their class teacher.
All food brought into school will be donated to our local foodbank. The Tameside East foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust’s network of more than 400 foodbanks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger in our local communities, as we all across the UK.
Food banks in the Trussell Trust network have seen the highest levels of need for this period, even superseding the peak reached during the pandemic.
Food banks in the Trussell Trust network distributed close to 1.5 million (1,496,847) emergency food parcels between 1 April to 30 September 2023. This is the most parcels that the network has ever distributed at this point in the year and represents a 16% increase from the same period in 2022.
This is also the first time that food banks in the Trussell Trust network have provided over half a million (543,635) parcels for children in this period, with record levels of need seen for both children and adults so far this year.
