In our reception classes, we learn about lots of exciting new things!
We have a new story focus every week, reading stories such as:

And many more.. (See our reading spine)

We help our children to understand and talk about their feelings using The Zones of Regulation. We have daily “check-ins” to make sure everyone feels happy and settled!
Our themes over the year are:
Autumn One – Magical Me!
Autumn Two – Colours
Spring One – Healthy Body and Healthy Mind
Spring Two – Growth and Change
Summer One – The World Around Me
Summer Two – I Wonder…

Phonics, Reading and Writing
We teach phonics daily using a scheme called “First Class Phonics”

This is a validated scheme with decodable reading books that really help children learn to read and write quickly. The aim by the end of reception class is that they can read and write simple words, phrases and a sentence or two!
Once children have developed the appropriate finger strength and fine motor skills, we then introduce them to letter formation. The school scheme that we use is:

We work towards the children using a Dynamic Tripod Grasp.

Maths

Maths resources for teachers | White Rose Education
For our daily Maths sessions, we follow the White Rose Scheme. The children are introduced to the number system through the use of visual images which supports them to subitise (recognise how many objects without counting). The children learn addition and subtraction as well as the vocabulary related to shape, space and measure.

There’s A Monster In Your Show UK Tour – Octagon Theatre, Bolton School Trip

We will be going on a trip to Smithill’s Farm in June:
Smithills Open Farm – Smithills Open Farm

At school, we help the children sow, plant and grow lots of fruit and vegetables in our garden as well as trying them for snack.

The children observe and learn about different plants, flowers and insects every day and use our fantastic outdoor area to become physically stronger, fit and healthy.
We teach the children how to ride balance bikes and once they are confident with this, we progress them to a pedal bike without stabilisers.

IMPORTANT PARENT AND CARER NOTES

- We use the online platform to share photos of what your child has been learning in their school day as well as sending and receiving important messages about your child. You will receive a QR code for this on their first day.
- Over the year we have various events for parents and carers to attend to help support your child’s learning. We will let you more details and the dates nearer the time.
- Please can children bring their book bags into school every day. We change books weekly every Monday.
- There are no PE sessions as such until the summer term as we use our outdoor environment to develop physical skills and have weekly cycling sessions. We will let you know when a PE kit is needed.
- Please ensure all clothing is labelled with your child’s name to reduce the amount of lost property.
- Please can children leave a pair of wellies at school so we can go out in all weathers!
- We provide children with free, fresh fruit daily for their snack and have water and milk available at all times. However, we suggest your child brings in a labelled bottle containing only water each day.
