Welcome to Year 2!

My name is Mrs Broadley-Forrest and I am the teacher in Y2BF. I have been teaching at Silver Springs for 13 years and I absolutely love our wonderful school.

My name is Mrs Billance and I am the teacher in Y2SB. I have been teaching at Silver Springs for 13 years and I love the amazing progress that Year 2 make!

We have an amazing team of Teaching Assistants in Year 2! Mrs Miller, Mrs Allford, Mr Chatterton, Miss Bolton and Miss Humphries support our children in class and with interventions.

we help our children to understand and talk about their feelings using The Zones of Regulation. We have daily “check-ins” to make sure everyone feels happy and settled! The children are fantastic at identifying their emotions and talking eloquently about how to get themselves in the ‘green zone’!

Phonics, Reading and Writing

We teach phonics daily using a scheme called “First Class Phonics

FCP BCED | First Class Phonics

This is a validated scheme with decodable reading books that really help children learn to read and write quickly.

By the end of Year 2, we aim for most children to be reading a ‘white’ banded book. We want our children to be fluent readers – the more practise the better! We change reading books on Fridays 😊

Maths

Maths resources for teachers | White Rose Education

For our daily Maths sessions, we follow the White Rose Scheme. Together we learn about addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, money and shape. We practise these using apps such as Numbots, Times Tables Rockstars and Doodle Maths.

Other exciting aspects of our learning

We cover a wide variety of things as part of our wider curriculum, including

  • Hot and cold areas in geography
  • The Great Fire of London in history
  • Andy Goldsworthy in art
  • How to programme a character on Scratch Jnr in computing

Homework

Our homework in Year 2 is online and practises things key skills which we learn in class.

Each week our online learning platforms will be checked and dojos given for reading and completing homework.
