Welcome to Year 3!

My name is Mrs Couper-Barton and I am the teacher in Y3C-B

I am Mr Stott and I teach in Y3S. I believe that a strong partnership between home and school is key to a successful year. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or would just like to check in, you’re very welcome to contact me via the school office or send a message on Class Dojo. I’ll also use Class Dojo to share reminders, class updates, and celebrate some of the brilliant things we’re doing in Year 3.

Thank you for your continued support. I’m really looking forward to working together to help your child grow, learn, and thrive this year.

Mrs Miller, Mrs Kelly and Mrs Doherty are Teaching assistants in Year 3.

In Year 3, we’ll be exploring a wide and exciting curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and support each child’s individual progress. From diving into new topics in Science and History to developing key skills in Maths and English, there’s so much to look forward to.

In English, we have daily reading sessions to develop fluency, comprehension, and a love of reading. Our English lessons will focus on handwriting, grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction, all built around engaging and high-quality books. This helps children connect their writing to rich vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and meaningful themes.

In Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths small steps sequence of learning, helping children develop a deep and secure understanding of key concepts. We also revisit and strengthen basic number skills from Key Stage 1. Children will take part in weekly arithmetic practice and regular oral times tables sessions to boost their mental maths and fluency.

In Science, we’ll investigate a range of exciting topics, including rocks, light, forces and magnets, plants, and animals including humans. These lessons are practical, engaging, and designed to build scientific thinking and enquiry skills.

In History, we’ll be learning about Mary Seacole, exploring life from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, and discovering how the Romans changed Britain. In Geography, we’ll be finding out about the Americas, learning how earthquakes and volcanoes shape our world, and studying regions of the UK — including a close look at our own area of Greater Manchester.

Please have a look at our topic web for more information about what’s covered across the year.

Class Routines and Expectations

We aim to provide a structured and supportive environment where children feel happy, safe, and motivated to learn.

  • Children can attend Breakfast Club from 8:30am for a calm and nutritious start to the day.
  • PE takes place every Tuesday, and children should come to school in their PE kits on that day.
  • At the end of the day, children will remain seated in their places and will be dismissed one at a time by an adult from the classroom door. This ensures a calm, safe, and organised end to the day. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
  • Our SHINE rules guide behaviour in class and around school:
    • Show respect
    • Have good manners
    • Include everyone
    • Never hurt anyone
    • Excellent choice making
  • Our Golden Rule is: Treat everyone the way you want to be treated. This is the foundation for how we work and learn together.

Homework

Children will be given a weekly set of spellings and times tables to practise at home at the start of the week, and their home reading book which children should read for at least five minutes per evening.

All homework in Y3S will be given out on Monday and is expected to be returned on Friday.

Homework club is after school on Thursday.

PE Days

We have PE on Tuesdays. Please come to school wearing your full PE kit on this day. Our Sports club for Year 3 is also on Tuesdays.

Reading

We love to read in year 3! Please read a much as you can with your child. In the back of the diary there are some questions to help develop their understanding. Please ask them a couple of questions about the book and sign the diary. Extra dojo points will be awarded every time your child has read, and their book is signed. Books will be changed once they have been completed and they can explain what the book was about.

Contacting us

If you have any worries or concerns, please feel free to send a message via Dojo. You can also see us at the door after the school day or arrange a convenient time to speak to us.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
We designed and made pencil cases using felt and sewing the sides. We attached a velcro fastening.
SCIENCE
We planted seeds to see if we could give them everything they require to grow well.
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
We designed and made our own bread rolls
ART
We explored the properties of charcoal and used Matise as inspiration for our own work.

HISTORY

We visited Ribchester (a Roman Village) to see what it was like in Roman Times. We saw remains of buildings, replica artifacts and dressed as Roman Soldiers.
