Welcome to Year 1

My name is Miss Anderson and I am one of the Year One teachers here at Silver Springs Academy. This is my fifth year of teaching at this wonderful school and I absolutely love it!

This year, we will be working hard to take on new challenges, expand our knowledge and understanding and achieve our full potential both inside and outside of the classroom.

When I am not in school, I love going for walks in the countryside with my dog, cooking and spending time with my family.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any additional questions.

My name is Mr Selby and I am the teacher in Y1S. I have been teaching infant classes at Silver Springs for over 10 years and I absolutely love working with the children on our school.

We have an amazing team of Teaching Assistants in Year 1! Mrs Doherty and Mrs Jones support our children in class and with interventions.

We love books!

Engaging children in high quality texts is a priority for us. Take a look at our Reading Spine to find out which texts your child will encounter during their time in Year One!

We help our children to understand and talk about their feelings using The Zones of Regulation. We have daily “check-ins” to make sure everyone feels happy and settled! The children are fantastic at identifying their emotions and talking eloquently about how to get themselves in the ‘green zone’.

We love to learn!

We have lots of exciting things planned for the children in Year One take a look at our Year One Long Term Plan, to see what’s in store!

Phonics, Reading and Writing

We teach phonics daily using a scheme called “First Class Phonics

This is a validated scheme with decodable reading books that really help children learn to read and write quickly.

By the end of Year 1, we aim for most children to be reading fluently and with enjoyment. To that end – the more practise the better!

Maths

Maths resources for teachers | White Rose Education

For our daily Maths sessions, we follow the White Rose Scheme. Together we learn about addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, money and shape. We practise these using apps such as Doodle Maths.

Other exciting aspects of our learning

We cover a wide variety of things as part of our wider curriculum, including

  • ‘All About The UK’ in Geography
  • ‘Seaside Holidays’  in History
  • ‘Flora and Fauna’ in Art
  • ‘Fruit Kebabs’ in Design & Technology

Important Parent/Carer Notes

  • We use the online platform class dojo to share photos of what your child has been learning, as well as sending and receiving messages about your child.
  • Over the year we have several events for parents and carers to attend to help support your child’s learning. We will let you more details and the dates nearer the time.
  • Please can children bring their book bags into school every day. We aim to change books as often as we can, preferably twice a week.
  • We have PE on Mondays and the children come to school in their PE kits.
  • Please ensure all clothing is labelled with your child’s name to reduce the amount of lost property.
  • We provide children with free, fresh fruit daily for their snack and have water available at all times. However, we suggest your child brings in a labelled bottle containing only water each day.
